In order to confirm your identity when filing taxes – efiling to be exact – the IRS uses your Adjusted Gross Income, or AGI from the tax return you filed in the prior year.
There are few ways to get your AGI:
– If you filed taxes using TurboTax last year, TurboTax will transfer that number automatically for you when you file with the same account.
– Look up the number on the last year tax return; bear in mind that the required information is listed on the unamended return; you can find it in the following fields:
o Form 1040 – line 37
o Form 1040A – line 21
o Form 1040EZ – line 4
o Form 1040NR – line 36
o Form1040X – line 1 in Column A
– Request an IRS transcript – if you cannot find your prior year return, visit irs.gov and use Get Transcript Tool to request the document you need; the AGI amount is listed on Adjusted Gross Income line.
